Johannesburg, South Africa – 15 May 2025 – As the 2025 Grain SA NAMPO Harvest Day unfolds in the heart of South Africa’s agricultural landscape, Bridgestone Southern Africa is shifting the spotlight to an input cost that often flies under the radar—tyres. Amid soaring operational expenses, the global tyre manufacturer is urging farmers to reconsider the critical role premium-quality tyres play in maintaining productivity, profitability, and long-term sustainability on the land.

Agricultural tyres may not command the attention of drones or soil sensors, but their impact is just as profound. Recent estimates reveal that farmers collectively manage a tyre inventory worth over R1.2 billion annually across a diverse fleet of agricultural machinery—from tractors and harvesters to bakkies and motorcycles. This figure, based on a conservative calculation of roughly 30,000 commercial farms nationwide, underscores the scale and importance of tyres as operational assets.

“In an environment where input prices are rising faster than returns from crops and livestock, it’s essential that every rand counts,” says Jacques Rikhotso, Vice President of Bridgestone Africa Middle East. “Premium tyres are more than just components; they’re a critical enabler of uptime, safety, and cost-efficiency on farms.”

While farmers have increasingly adopted advanced technologies—satellite mapping, precision irrigation, weather forecasting apps—tyres are still sometimes seen as a basic purchase. Yet, high-quality agricultural tyres offer far more than durability. They’re engineered to reduce soil compaction, improve traction, and lower fuel consumption—key efficiencies that directly impact yield and cost.

Bridgestone is using its presence at NAMPO to showcase its locally manufactured tyre innovations designed for South African conditions. Among the highlights is the new Dueler A/T002, Bridgestone’s latest in all-terrain technology, built for the rugged realities of rural mobility. Also on display are Very High Flexion (VF) tyres, featuring cutting-edge tread technology for handling heavy loads across varied terrain with minimal soil disruption.

In addition to showcasing its flagship agricultural and utility tyres, Bridgestone is emphasizing the long-term value proposition of investing in premium-grade rubber. A longer lifespan means fewer replacements, while improved performance equates to smoother operations, better fuel economy, and enhanced safety across the board.

“Tyres may not be the first thing farmers think of when they review their input costs, but they should be,” Rikhotso adds. “They’re the only part of the machine that actually touches the ground—and everything rides on them.”

As the agricultural community continues to navigate volatile markets and environmental challenges, Bridgestone’s message at NAMPO is clear: the road to farming resilience starts from the ground up.
