DP World Wanderers, Johannesburg – 18 November 2024: Mahindra South Africa has marked a new chapter in its South African journey by becoming the Official Vehicle Sponsor of Lions Cricket. The two-year partnership, signed at the iconic DP World Wanderers Stadium, underscores Mahindra’s commitment to cricket and community development in South Africa.
The announcement coincided with the Proteas’ preparations for their final T20 International against India, setting the stage for an exciting collaboration between one of South Africa’s premier cricket franchises and the fast-growing automotive brand.
A Partnership Beyond the Pitch
Mahindra’s CEO, Rajesh Gupta, highlighted the broader significance of this partnership.
“As we celebrate our twentieth anniversary in South Africa and the production of our 20,000th Mahindra Pik Up, this collaboration with Lions Cricket is a milestone that reflects our growth as a trusted brand in the country,” said Gupta.
Mahindra’s support goes beyond branding on Lions Cricket kits and stadium sponsorship. The partnership aligns with the Lions’ community-driven initiatives, including school sports development, rural cricket outreach, and charitable causes such as breast cancer awareness, feeding schemes, and promoting the health of young girls in schools.
“We are proud to join forces with Lions Cricket to amplify their efforts in making a meaningful difference in South African communities,” Gupta added.

Cricket as a Strategic Pillar
This collaboration with Lions Cricket marks Mahindra’s second foray into cricket sponsorship. Earlier this year, the brand partnered with the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 Cricket Series, providing vehicles and financial support.
As part of the new agreement, Lions Cricket will receive a fleet of Mahindra’s flagship vehicles, including the XUV700, the rugged Scorpio-N—recently crowned South Africa’s SUV of the Year—and the new XUV3XO. The latter, Mahindra’s compact SUV offering, boasts six airbags, vehicle stability control, and a turbocharged petrol engine, all starting from R254,999.
These vehicles will be used by Lions Cricket for operational purposes, while Mahindra’s Pik Up bakkies will help facilitate activations and match-day engagements at the DP World Wanderers Stadium. Fans can also look forward to vehicle displays, exciting activities, and giveaways during both domestic and international matches.
Building Dreams Together
Lions Cricket CEO, Jono Leaf-Wright, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership.
“We are truly grateful for this meaningful collaboration with Mahindra. With their support, we are confident in bringing our ambitious plans to life, not just for cricket but for the community as well,” said Leaf-Wright.
The Lions are not only reigning champions in the T20 Challenge Series and the 4-Day Domestic Series but also the 2023 Sports Organisation of the Year. This partnership promises to amplify their impact on and off the field.
A Winning Kickoff
Mahindra launched its partnership in style during the recent international T20 test at DP World Wanderers. With their presence cemented, Mahindra will now be an integral part of all upcoming games, including the DP World Lions’ clash against Western Province in the domestic league.
By combining a shared passion for cricket and community upliftment, Mahindra and Lions Cricket are poised to make a lasting impact.
