The 2024 Mazda MX-5 has earned the prestigious title of ‘Convertible of the Year’ at the Auto Express New Car Awards. This accolade marks another milestone in the celebrated history of Mazda’s iconic sports car, which first captivated enthusiasts at the 1989 Chicago Motor Show.

Auto Express Editor Paul Barker praised the MX-5’s enduring appeal, noting, “The MX-5’s ability to bring joy to drivers remains unmatched. The revised 2024 model introduces advanced technology while maintaining the sharp handling that enthusiasts love. In a market where cars are becoming increasingly larger, the MX-5 stands out as a refreshing, fun-to-drive vehicle, whether the roof is up or down.”

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 offers an eight-model lineup, including four Roadster and four RF variants, available in Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, and Homura trims. The Prime-Line models are powered by a 132ps 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G engine, while the Exclusive-Line offers a choice between the 1.5-litre and the more powerful 184ps 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine. The top-tier Homura trim is exclusively equipped with the 184ps unit. Prices for the 2024 Mazda MX-5 start at £28,015 for the 1.5-litre Prime-Line Roadster.

The 2.0-litre models come standard with a front strut brace, limited slip differential, and Bilstein dampers. New for 2024 is the Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential, featuring a lightweight, compact, and durable cam mechanism. This innovative design optimizes slip limiting force during both acceleration and deceleration, enhancing stability and maintaining the MX-5’s renowned handling balance.

Inside, the 2024 MX-5 receives significant upgrades. The cabin now boasts a larger 8.8-inch touchscreen multimedia display and an updated instrument panel. The new screen offers clearer navigation and improved functionality through the advanced MZ Connect system, complemented by the addition of USB-C ports. The driver-focused interior remains, with the Homura trim now featuring Recaro seats upholstered in leather and Alcantara.

For over three decades, the Mazda MX-5 has epitomized the pure, lightweight sports car, with a driving experience centered on engagement. The 2024 model continues this legacy, delivering exhilarating open-top driving while adhering to the principles of agility, lightness, and balanced handling.

Exclusive-Line and Homura models introduce a new Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) track driving mode, designed to delay intervention for a more dynamic yet secure driving experience. Further refinements include enhanced throttle response and reduced steering rack friction, ensuring a more natural and fluid steering feel, deepening the driver’s connection with the car and the road.

Since its debut, over 1.2 million MX-5s have been produced at Mazda’s Ujina plant in Hiroshima, with more than 135,000 sold in the UK alone, underscoring its popularity among British sports car enthusiasts.

Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director at Mazda Motors UK, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, “The current generation MX-5 has set a benchmark for driver engagement. The 2024 model continues to offer one of the most thrilling and satisfying driving experiences available, making it an honor to be recognized by Auto Express. The MX-5 resonates deeply with British drivers, staying true to its original ethos of being an affordable, lightweight, and immensely fun-to-drive roadster. In a market with fewer affordable driver’s cars, the MX-5 stands out even more.”

With its latest award, the Mazda MX-5 solidifies its status as a timeless classic, continuing to deliver unmatched driving pleasure and embodying the perfect harmony between driver and machine.
