Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has reaffirmed its commitment to the local community by funding two new Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) in the neighbouring village of Westhampnett and the adjoining hamlet of Maudlin. Developed in close partnership with Westhampnett Parish Council, the initiative forms part of the marque’s long-term strategy to enhance traffic flows and improve road safety in areas surrounding the Home of Rolls-Royce.
“At Rolls-Royce, we’re committed to being a good neighbour and having a positive impact on our local community,” said Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Relations. “As the largest local employer, we inevitably have an impact on local traffic volumes, so we are especially keen to be involved in initiatives that support road safety and improved driver behaviour. We were therefore delighted to be able to support Westhampnett Parish Council by funding two new Speed Indicator Devices at key locations. The SIDs will make a lasting contribution to the safety and wellbeing of residents and our workforce alike.”
Unlike speed cameras, which are primarily enforcement tools, these solar-powered devices are designed to educate and prevent. Drivers approaching the SIDs are rewarded with a ‘happy’ face if they are travelling within the speed limit, while those exceeding it are shown a ‘sad’ face. This simple, visual feedback encourages drivers to adjust their speed, fostering safer driving behaviour, particularly in sensitive areas such as school zones and residential streets.

Beyond immediate driver feedback, the SIDs collect valuable traffic data, logging the date, time, and speed of each passing vehicle. Importantly, this information is fully anonymised and not linked to number plates or individual drivers. These insights provide the Parish Council with a clearer understanding of local traffic patterns, helping to identify trends, peak speeding times, and areas that may benefit from additional safety measures. The data can also support targeted enforcement, such as police speed checks or the installation of new signage and traffic calming measures.
The project is a tangible example of Rolls-Royce’s broader community engagement strategy, reflecting the marque’s ongoing commitment to the wellbeing of residents and employees alike. By combining innovative technology with local partnerships, Rolls-Royce is helping to create safer roads while strengthening ties with the communities around its global headquarters.
Through initiatives such as this, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars continues to demonstrate that world-class engineering and corporate responsibility can go hand in hand, ensuring that progress and safety travel side by side.
