Milton Keynes – Volkswagen has added another chapter to its long-running awards success story, as its latest electric newcomer – the ID. Polo – has picked up its very first UK accolade. Less than a month after being confirmed at the Munich Motor Show, the small electric hatchback has been crowned “One to Watch” by News UK at its prestigious annual Motor Awards.

The recognition comes ahead of the car’s 2026 arrival, underlining the excitement and anticipation already surrounding the model.

ID. Polo Takes Centre Stage

The One to Watch title is awarded by News UK’s team of automotive journalists across The Times, The Sunday Times, The Sun, and talkSPORT, identifying the car that is most eagerly anticipated in the year ahead.

Will Dron, Digital Driving Editor at The Times and The Sunday Times, explained why the ID. Polo stood out:

“The mere fact the Polo name lives on into the electric era is enough to get excited about. But there’s more to look forward to than that: a choice of batteries offering up to 280 miles of range, the potential for very attractive pricing, and the use of more sustainable materials and construction processes have certainly whetted our appetites. The confirmation that we’ll also get an ID. Polo GTI is the icing on the cake. Without doubt, ID. Polo is our One to Watch.”

For Volkswagen, the accolade reinforces the strategic importance of extending one of its most iconic badges into the electric era. Since its debut in the 1970s, the Polo has been a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s small-car success, and the ID. Polo looks set to continue that tradition while aligning with the brand’s sustainable future.

Diesel and Eco Car Recognise Golf and Tiguan

Volkswagen’s award run has not stopped with the ID. Polo. In its latest Diesel Top 50 issue, Diesel and Eco Car magazine has honoured two of the brand’s most enduring models:

  • The Volkswagen Golf was named Best Diesel Medium Car, with Editor Ian Robertson praising its balance of performance and efficiency:
“A facelift has revitalised the Golf, keeping this icon sharp as it approaches its sixth decade. The latest 2.0-litre TDI engine is smooth and frugal, returning just over 64 mpg at its most economical, while still providing ample performance. It remains the benchmark medium hatchback – familiar, but always excellent.”
  • The Volkswagen Tiguan, the brand’s best-selling model worldwide, was crowned Best Diesel Medium SUV. Robertson highlighted its move upmarket, generous interior space, and dependable diesel performance:
“The latest Tiguan has moved upmarket with sleeker looks, more space and improved technology. Its 652-litre boot is one of the biggest in class, cementing the Tiguan’s reputation as the SUV that simply works.”

ID.7 Named Best EV at Leasing.com Awards

Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s flagship electric saloon, the ID.7, has continued to impress industry judges. At the Leasing.com Awards, it was crowned Best EV 2025, with Leasing.com CEO Mike Fazal remarking:

“The Volkswagen ID.7 shows just how far EVs have come. It offers the practicality and range that customers demand, while bringing genuine desirability to the electric market. It’s been one of the stand-out EVs on Leasing.com this year.”

A Growing List of Trophies

The latest string of accolades adds to what has already been a standout year for Volkswagen across multiple models and segments. From towing and safety honours for the Passat, to fleet and hybrid recognition for the Golf, and hot hatch acclaim for the GTI, the brand has demonstrated remarkable breadth in meeting diverse customer needs.

Highlights include:

  • The Passat sweeping categories at the What Car? Awards, including Estate of the Year and Tow Car of the Year.
  • The Golf being recognised across hybrid, fleet, and new-driver categories, reaffirming its universal appeal.
  • The ID.7 Tourer taking top spot as Best Electric Estate at both What Car? and What Car? Electric Car of the Year Awards.
  • The Polo named Best Car of the Half Century at the British Motor Show, proving the enduring power of the badge.
  • The ID.4 and T-Roc also receiving class-leading recognition in their respective segments.

Volkswagen’s Award-Winning Momentum

Taken together, these achievements underscore Volkswagen’s ability to deliver excellence across both traditional combustion and next-generation electric vehicles. From timeless icons like the Golf and Polo to cutting-edge EVs like the ID.7 and the forthcoming ID. Polo, the brand continues to balance heritage with innovation.

With the ID. Polo already winning awards before its showroom debut, expectations are high for the car to redefine the small EV segment when it launches in 2026. As Volkswagen strengthens its line-up across every key category, its awards cabinet looks set to grow even fuller in the years ahead.
